“After the Lavrov session had concluded, members of the U.S. media were allowed into the Oval Office — where they found the president sitting with Henry Kissinger , who served as President Richard Nixon’s secretary of state. The meeting hadn’t been listed on the president’s official schedule.”

This shit is surreal.

the boomers got old and are convinced the way everything was when they were kids (in the 1950s) was absolutely perfect and that’s what we need to go back to. Cold War included.

seriously, the fetishizing of the ‘50s among them is strong.

I can’t get over this shit.

And people acting like it’s okay. Seriously Trump could punt a baby across a field on camera and Republicans would be “deeply troubled” for about three days and then go back to creating tax cuts for the wealthy.

I can only imagine the pandemonium in newsrooms right now. I’ve read up on Kissinger, his crimes are not taught in school of course, so a lot of people will think nothing of this, but fuck... this is a problem. Even without the context of recent events, this would be a problem. With it, jesus... I’m just floored.

The tone deafness of the whole thing is boggling. It reeks of a person who has lost touch with the basic fibers of reality. When the senate and the house are realizing that it’s useless to plug the holes and leaks anymore, the ship will sink. But sadly, it will take many people down with it.

Remember - watergate wasn’t done and over in a weekend. The scandal went on for over a YEAR AND A HALF. Honestly. I’ll be amazed if we see any real heads rolling before 2018. Though the orange goblin himself is accelerating the timeline. Nixon fired the investigator looking into him in August of 1973 (the investigation starting at the end of his campaign year in 1972 and really pushed forward in January 1973). And had cabinet members and staff resigning in April of 1973. Trump, meanwhile, has had numerous high profile firings of staff as shortly as February of 2017, IIRC. And fired the man looking into him, ironically someone he praised very highly for his own tone-deaf moves, in May of 2017.

Hmmm.......Well, let’s see how this hand plays out. Political poker is a difficult game. Not many people can bluff their way through the river cards despite only holding a cocktail napkin and a skip-bo card, but somehow this train wreck of a hand continues on, and he keeps raising every round.

well, it was fairly easy to get a decent-paying unskilled job back then, but that’s because the rest of the industrialized world was spending all of its money and resources rebuilding after bombing the shit out of each other during WWII. We, on the other hand, were relatively unscathed, had pent-up demand for consumer goods and cars (production of which had been suspended in favor of war materials,) had thousands of returning servicemen who would need jobs (kicking all the Rosie the Riveters out and back into the kitchen) and a market ripe for exports to those rebuilding countries. the US’s boom immediately post-WWII was truly just a fortunate set of coincidences which we were uniquely poised to benefit from.

there’s really no way for this country to go back to the way things were in the ‘50s. Automation has eliminated as many or more factory jobs as off-shoring.

I was working my first real job at a beach restaurant on the NC Outer Banks. Hurricane Agnes had just formed and it was raining at work that night. I was taking out trash when I over heard the Watergate break in on a transistor radio that one of the kitchen help was listening to from a back porch while watching for the approaching storm. Had just gotten my second car that I made money to buy and I was still in high school. Listened to news of the storm mixed with reports of the Watergate mess as I drove home that night in heavy rain. It was AM radio and I recall having to keep tuning to different stations to hear anything because of the weather. The hurricane hit a couple of days later.

If you look into corruption and politics it seems to go hand in hand. I’ve always wondered if you can really trust any of them.

I missed Watergate and its fallout by a few years, but man, that must have been quite a thing to hear go down. If the current situation ends up any deeper for the US, I imagine I’ll remember this time the same way. Definitely hard to trust any politicians in this climate, I sure as hell didn’t trust our presidential candidates.

Clearly Trump doesn’t give a shit about optics. Everyone’s been comparing the Comey firing to Nixon firing the special prosecutor during Watergate. So let’s invite Nixon’s Sec of State to the WH on the same day as the Russians that Comey was investigating but definitely didn’t get fired over!

It was just about as bad back then. I was in high school but got my draft card about the same time. I didn’t have to go to Nam because of the timing of the end of the war and my numbers were high in the draft the years I was eligible. Lost a few upper classmen who went. They were scary times. I would have gone if called but ended up after college helping the country find oil for 7 yrs. Hope my seismic job work for Exxon from that time nets us oil for our future. The stuff we found offshore of the East Coast in those years is still untapped.

I don’t know that I’d call any of his behavior excellent, more like scary clown jumping out of bushes. I might not like the color, but the M coupe is too good for him. Perhaps a rattlecanned gold Lada would be more fitting...

I’m glad someone’s mainstream press calls him out, ours sure doesn’t enough.
